✨Culture shock is real – and it takes time and effort to overcome. At first, even the smallest things felt overwhelming, but through patience and an open mind, you learn to adapt.

🥢 Getting used to the food is a journey – Coming from Italy, adjusting to the food in China (and later in Switzerland) wasn’t easy. I’ll never forget how sore my hands were the first week in China from using chopsticks nonstop!

🌍 It gets lonely – Living abroad and constantly moving means making incredible friendships worldwide, but also realizing that reunions are rare. Some places, like Switzerland, have a more reserved culture, making it challenging to build new friendships. But with time, you learn to appreciate solitude and cherish the connections you do make.

Would I change anything? Not a chance.

✨ Lo shock culturale è reale – e serve tempo e impegno per superarlo. All’inizio anche le cose più semplici sembravano difficili, ma con pazienza e una mente aperta, ci si abitua.

🥢 Abituarsi al cibo richiede tempo - Venendo dall’Italia, adattarmi al cibo in Cina (e poi in Svizzera) è stato una sfida. Ricordo ancora le mie mani indolenzite la prima settimana in Cina per aver usato troppo le bacchette!

🌍 La solitudine si sente – Vivere all’estero e spostarsi spesso significa costruire amicizie incredibili in tutto il mondo, ma anche rendersi conto che non è sempre facile rivedersi. Alcuni paesi, come la Svizzera, hanno una cultura più chiusa, e fare nuove amicizie può essere difficile. Ma con il tempo impari ad apprezzare la solitudine e a dare più valore ai legami che crei.

Cambierei qualcosa? Non proprio.

Traveling to China might seem difficult due to expenses, visas, and language barriers, but it’s actually easier than you think! Here are my three tips for a smooth experience:✨

1- Get technological 📲 :
China is highly technological, and most daily activities are managed via apps. Popular apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, and Facebook don’t work there, so download these alternatives before you go:
- WeChat: For communication and payments.
- Alipay: Now links with foreign cards for payments.
- Baidu Map/Gaode Map: For navigation.
- Xiaohongshu: Chinese social media for finding nearby activities, restaurants and shopping.
- Translator app: Essential if you don’t speak Mandarin, and some work offline.

2- Respect Cultural Differences 🪭 :
Understanding and respecting local customs will enhance your experience. For instance, avoid sticking chopsticks upright in your food, as this is considered disrespectful. 🥢

3- Learn some Mandarin 🇨🇳:
Locals appreciate when foreigners speak even a few words of Mandarin. Simple phrases like “你好” (hello) and “谢谢” (thank you) can make a big difference and earn you lots of praise.

China is an incredible country with rich history, culture, and advanced conveniences. It’s safe and efficient and more futuristic than many Western countries I’ve been to. Plus, Italian passport holders (as well as other nationalities) can visit without a visa for 15 days until November the 30th 2024. So, book that ticket if you can! ✈️

I still can’t believe I was actually in Shangri-La, a place where Tibetan influences come to life, making it feel like a world of its own.

This place truly shows how diverse China is—you can go from massive megacities to peaceful villages surrounded by breathtaking nature. Finding spots like this makes traveling here so special ✨
